Luke 19:11-26

“He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.’"

Now it is the time again to learn something from the Bible that, we believe, is God’s Word. One of the Bible verses, I like, about the power of God’s Word is Hebrews 4:12. It says: “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” What it means is, put simply, when you pay attention to God’s Word, keep it in mind, and try to put it into action, it is going to lead you to the way you can grow up into a big mustard tree. That being said, I would like to recap what we learned from God’s Word last Sunday. I think that as soon as you see this picture, you know what it was. Yes, we learned the importance of being humble. To be humble, you need to exactly know who you are and what you are – like your strengths and weaknesses. When you know about yourself well, you can easily figure out when to go ahead, when to stop, and when to step back. Remember that even though you think you are good at something, there are always a number of people out there who are better than you. Then, do you have to give up what you are good at? No, stay humble but stay hungry for improving your specialty every day.

With that in mind, I would like to ask all of you one very simple question. What do you want to do with your life? Now you are elementary students. But, within only 10 years, you will become adults. Being an adult is good because you are finally hooked off from your parents’ 24/7 supervision that bothers and irritates you constantly. But, everything has two sides: good and bad. Unfortunately, being an adult is bad because you will be totally responsible for your adult-life. With one minor mistake, you can destroy your life entirely. What is worse, sometimes there will be no second chance. I am serious. That is the reality of adulthood. So, what do you want to do with your life when you become an adult? If you have something to do in mind when you grow up, that is good because at least you know the direction of your life journey to take. On the contrary, if you don’t know yet what to do with your life, please spend some times during this summer deciding one thing you really want to do and can enjoy until the last moment of your life.

Today Jesus will ask all of us the same question. His question is written in Luke 19:11-26. Jesus tells us a long story in which an angry and merciless king appears. To be honest with you, the king symbolizes God. So, when you read it, try to find why God is so angry. I am going to ask you. Let us read it.

Did you find why the king became so angry to the third servant? We all have heard that God is loving, mercy, kind, and generous. But, in the story we met a very different God who was really angry and lost little time in punishing one of his servants. Do you know why? Before going on a trip, the king gave his three servants three different amounts of money, right? A mina is about three-month wages of one daily laborer in Jesus’ time. For the sake of convenience, let us change the currency into the US dollar. The king gave them $10 each equally. Three monthly later he came back and called for them. The first servant brought $20 dollars. The second servant $15 dollars. The king praised their efforts to create a profit. The third servant came and gave the original $10 dollars back to the king. The king became furious, took it away from him, and gave it to the firs servant. The reason why the third servant could not take any risk with the $10 dollars is that he was afraid of the king. He was worried. Maybe, he was not as social and innovative as the two other servants. But, the king did not consider anything like this. Why?

If you liken the original $10 dollars to life given to you, then you got the answer. When you grow up, you are responsible for your life. Period. I am responsible for my life. Your parents are responsible for their lives. Your teachers are responsible for their lives. Today Jesus says, “Hey, guys, if you are alive, do something good for you, your family, your friends, and the world. Being alive means you have to do something to make this world a little better for everyone. God gave each of us life. Our job given by God is to make this world a little bit better, not just for you, but for everyone. Let me ask you once again. What do you want to do with your life? After worship, you can share your answers with your teachers and friends.

Prayer

God, today we learned that we are given 10 dollars each equally. What to do with it is solely dependent on us. God, we want to use the 10 dollars wisely and efficiently. God, help us and guide us in deciding what we can do with our life to make this world a little bit better place for everyone. We pray in your name Jesus Christ. Amen.
